Welcome to smartcanula
”Everything comes to him who hustles while he waits.” Thomas Alva Edison
More than 20 years of experience and success show: We haven’t waited since filing the patent application in 2001. With heart, mind and passion, we have dedicated ourselves to the production and (further) development of our canulas.
smartcanula is proud to have a medical luminary as founder, Professor Ludwig von Segesser, who completed his training in cardiovascular surgery in Geneva, Houston and Zurich.
Today he is diplomat of
the Swiss Chamber Society of Surgery | the Swiss Chamber Society of Cardiac Surgery | the Swiss Chamber Society of Vascular Surgery | the European Board of Thoracic and Cardio-Vascular Surgeons.
He has published over 790 articles and 20 patents and is a member of more than 30 scientific societies and 10 editorial boards.
There is always work to do in medicine.
“It wasn’t about inventing something and searching for an application for it. The work of the doctor brings along many problems and applications for which solutions must be found.” Prof. Ludwig von Segesser
After studying medicine at the University of Basel, Ludwig von Segesser concentrated on surgery because he want to: „Do something, not just discuss!“
Coincidence brought him to heart surgery and Professor von Segesser soon noticed: „Machines, implants, cardiac valves, tubes, many devices and aids can be improved.“
Professor von Segesser has been involved in research throughout his whole career. He is particularly fascinated by cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, the modification of artificial blood-carrying surfaces, mechanical circulatory support, pediatric and adult cardiovascular surgery and minimally invasive procedures.
This gives him constant access to research departments to advance, research and test his ideas.
The idea of the intelligent venous canula is presented to the technology transfer office in the University Hospital of Lausanne for the first time.
After application for a patent, countless bench tests and further trials, the smartcanula was used for the first time in an operation on humans in 2004. In the same year, Professor Ludwig von Segesser founds smartcanula in Lausanne. The company is privately owned up to and including 2021.
No Future without Origin
We are pleased to have found a strategic partner in BloodWiringSystems GmbH at the beginning of 2022. Our partner is based in Frankfurt and the common goal is to expand Professor von Segesser’s vision and unique canula technology.
Our next goal is to achieve MDR certification for the venous drainage smartcanula. We are also currently working on developing and establishing further sales partnerships.
We look forward to the future together, new challenges and new projects. Because one thing is certain: there is always work to do in medicine!
